Americans are feeling inflation's pinch into the holiday weekend. Here's where prices are rising the most
As Americans approach the Memorial Day weekend, they will encounter higher costs across various sectors, including fuel, food, and leisure activities, driven by rising inflation prompted by the ongoing Iran War.
According to recent federal data, total inflation experienced a year-over-year increase of 3.8% in April, marking the highest rate observed since 2023. Notably, travel, recreation, and food prices have surged, subsequently straining consumers' budgets as they celebrate the unofficial start of summer.
"They're not going to be pleased with what they encounter," remarked Stephen Juneau, senior U.S. economist at Bank of America. "We can expect significant dissatisfaction this weekend among travelers and shoppers."
Consumer sentiment reached its lowest recorded level in May, based on survey data from the University of Michigan made public this past Friday. This decline in outlook was exacerbated by escalating oil prices resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has persisted for nearly three months.
E.l.f. Beauty announced on Wednesday a rollback of certain price hikes, acknowledging that their consumers are feeling the strain of increased fuel costs. Additionally, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski expressed concerns earlier this month regarding the challenging environment the fast food chain must navigate amid rising inflationary pressures.
Food
This summer's barbecues will incur significantly higher expenses due to reduced cattle herds and increased fertilizer costs.
Prices for ground beef and steaks have increased by as much as 16% compared to 2025. Meanwhile, frankfurters are now nearly 11% more expensive than a year ago.
The price of tomatoes has surged by close to 40%, with lettuce seeing an approximate rise of 8% during the same time frame. Condiments, spices, and sauces have also climbed, reflecting nearly a 4% increase.
Desserts such as cakes, cupcakes, and cookies will cost consumers just over 5% more than last year. Carbonated beverages have increased by 3.7%, and coffee prices have soared over 18%. Although beer prices saw a recent slowdown in demand, they still increased by 2.2%.
Travel
This Memorial Day weekend is expected to see a record number of travelers, yet heightened transportation costs will pose an additional challenge due to war-related oil price increases.
AAA anticipates that 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period, which reflects a 0.4% increase over last year’s peak. Of those, more than 39 million are expected to travel by car.
Gasoline prices have experienced an increase exceeding 28% year-over-year, according to federal data. As the holiday approaches, the average national price for a gallon of unleaded gas stands at its highest point in four years, according to AAA.
"The holiday weekend presents additional financial strains this year," stated Kimberly Palmer, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet. "Memorial Day weekend typically involves extensive travel, prompting consumers to seek ways to save on fuel or reduce spending in other areas to accommodate rising gas prices."
Airline fares have surged by 20.7% from April 2025 to 2026, reaching their highest point since 2022. Airlines have attributed the need to raise ticket prices to the soaring costs of jet fuel following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global crude oil.
Spirit Airlines highlighted the need to halt operations earlier this month due to escalating jet fuel prices. Industry analysts have indicated that ticket prices may rise further in the absence of the budget airline in the marketplace.
Accommodations such as hotels and motels will also cost consumers approximately 4.3% more than they did a year ago.
In a survey conducted by Bank of America, about 30% of respondents indicated they would not alter their summer travel plans despite rising gas prices, whereas around one in five admitted they would consider scaling back vacations or opting for closer destinations.
Recreation
For Americans opting for staycations, inflation will similarly impact expenses related to summer leisure activities.
The cost of movie, theater, or concert tickets has risen by 5.5% in the past year. Interestingly, ticket prices for sporting events have decreased by 10% in the same period.
Prices for bicycles and related sporting vehicles are now 4.3% higher than last year. For those interested in gardening, supplies such as tools and hardware have risen by 5%, while the cost of indoor plants and flowers has increased by 6% in the past year.
