American Airlines has officially announced its intent to implement Starlink technology on over 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft starting early next year. This decision marks a significant endorsement of SpaceX's satellite communications service by one of the largest airlines in the world.
This agreement not only enhances Starlink's financial prospects but also strengthens SpaceX's competitive position against other players in the inflight connectivity sector, including Amazon's Project Kuiper and established providers like Viasat.
Utilizing low Earth orbit satellites, Starlink delivers broadband internet connectivity to both individual consumers and enterprise clients, such as American Airlines. The initiative aligns with SpaceX's ongoing efforts to secure partnerships within the aviation sector, where it has achieved notable success. According to recent filings related to SpaceX's upcoming IPO, the list of airlines that have integrated Starlink into their services includes United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa Group, British Airways, and Alaska Airlines (which has merged operations with Hawaiian Airlines).
While American Airlines joins the ranks of carriers leveraging Starlink, not all of its fleet will be fitted with this technology. Specifically, the airline's latest Airbus A321XLR and A320neo models will feature Starlink, while its Boeing aircraft will not benefit from this upgrade.
This contract represents yet another boost for SpaceX as it approaches its highly anticipated IPO scheduled for next month, which is expected to be the largest in history.
