What we're looking for in Startup Battlefield 2026, and how to apply in time for the May 27 deadline

Each year, the review process for Startup Battlefield applications reveals a consistent trend: the most noteworthy founders often hesitate to apply, convinced they are not sufficiently advanced in their journey. They underestimate their readiness, believing they need more traction or that the program caters to companies at a more mature stage.

To clarify our expectations, this article outlines the criteria we utilize during the selection process and how you can enhance your application. The deadline for submissions is May 27, accompanied by the urgency of tomorrow’s approach.

Startup Battlefield remains a centerpiece of TechCrunch Disrupt, taking place in San Francisco from October 13-15, culminating in the announcement of this year's champion. Our past winners include prestigious names like Cloudflare and Discord, as well as the latest class of emerging leaders.

What gets a company selected for Startup Battlefield

Startup Battlefield is not aimed at the most polished companies; rather, it identifies those with immense potential.

Our focus is on startups that present innovative and transformative ideas capable of making significant impacts within their respective industries or regions. For every application, we consistently pose a key question: Does this innovation result in a meaningful change? We seek genuine disruption, not merely incremental improvement.

Product and disruption. We examine what you are creating and assess whether it presents a significant shift in how existing processes operate. We are not interested in enhanced versions of current solutions but in breakthroughs that render previous iterations obsolete.

The founding team. We want to understand your motivation—why you, why this moment, and why this particular challenge? Your origin story plays a crucial role in your application. Founders who can compellingly communicate their passion and belief in their vision typically distinguish themselves.

Industry and geographic diversity. The Startup Battlefield 200 cohort embraces global representation. We actively seek companies from all corners of the world and various technology sectors. If you are developing a solution in a geography or field that is typically overlooked, this aspect will resonate with us.

What doesn't disqualify you from Startup Battlefield

Having press coverage. Securing local or industry-specific coverage is acceptable. We are interested in companies whose core technology has yet to receive widespread recognition. If you have garnered some attention but your product is not yet showcased, this platform is precisely what you need.

Being pre-launch. While a working minimum viable product (MVP) is necessary, having customers or revenue is not mandatory. Pre-launch startups are actively encouraged to apply.

Having applied before. Countless companies within the Startup Battlefield 200 have submitted applications multiple times before achieving acceptance. A rejection in the past does not reflect your prospects for the current submission.

Raising money. Startups that are bootstrapped, pre-seed, or at seed stage are welcome. Series A companies are evaluated on an individual basis, particularly those operating in capital-intensive sectors or pursuing fundraising in environments where financial dynamics diverge from Silicon Valley norms.

Tips for a strong Startup Battlefield application

Show your product working. This is the most critical element. Avoid mockups, simulations, or overly polished animations. We want to see your MVP operating in real-time, even if it is in a rough state or captured via a phone screen. Authenticity is paramount.

Know your competitive landscape. A response stating, "We have no competitors," is not credible and raises concerns about your market awareness. Identify your competitors, acknowledge their presence, and articulate clearly why your offering outperforms them. This section is vital and often lacks depth.

Tell your story. Share the motivation behind starting your company. What insights did you uncover that others overlooked? Why are you the right person to spearhead this venture? Your founding narrative is a significant factor in our evaluation and often underrepresented by applicants.

Don't overpolish. Prioritize clarity in writing, effectively showcase your product, and provide an honest assessment of your current status. We can appreciate rough edges; what we find challenging is an application that is overly curated to the point where the essence of the company becomes obscured.

Resubmit if you need to. If you submit before feeling fully prepared, remain composed. You have the option to resubmit until the May 27 deadline. While editing a submitted application is not allowed, you can submit a new entry.

The deadline to apply for Startup Battlefield

Applications will close on May 27, 2026. Companies selected for participation will be notified approximately two months prior to TechCrunch Disrupt.

If you find yourself uncertain, we encourage you to apply. The most unfavorable outcome is that you may not be selected this round, but the experience gained will undoubtedly strengthen your application for the following year.

We created this initiative to discover extraordinary talent before it is recognized on a larger scale. Your application is your initial opportunity to pitch your vision.
