Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Oil Port

Ukrainian drones have conducted an assault on Russia’s Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga for the fifth instance in just ten days, as Kyiv intensifies its operations against Russia’s oil export infrastructure.

Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that the overnight strikes resulted in injuries to three individuals, including two children, and caused damage to several structures in the area.

In a Telegram message, he indicated that air-raid alerts in the region were subsequently lifted, but he refrained from providing additional details regarding the extent of the damage to the port.

Ust-Luga, situated on the southeastern shore of the Gulf of Finland, is a significant facility dedicated to the handling of crude oil and related products. Authorities noted that the port has endured attacks on March 22, 25, 27, 29, and 31, which have led to interruptions in export activities.

In the previous year, the port saw exports of 32.9 million metric tonnes of oil products and typically processes around 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

As the frequency of attacks escalates, Ukraine has noticeably increased its operations targeting Russia’s oil export capabilities over the past month, marking a significant uptick in drone strikes during the ongoing conflict.

International Reactions and Oil Prices

Efforts to reach a peaceful resolution to the persistent war in Ukraine have stagnated amidst conflicts in the Middle East, raising concerns that Western military aid to Ukraine could be compromised.

Concurrently, oil prices have experienced a spike, with Brent crude prices climbing above $116 a barrel in the context of heightened tensions related to the US-Israel military engagement with Iran. Reports suggest that these drone strikes have resulted in a cessation of approximately 40 percent of Russia's oil export capacity.

Kyiv has also reported that its air defense systems successfully intercepted 267 out of 289 drones launched by Russia. Meanwhile, Russian forces announced their capture of the village of Mala Korchakivka in the northern Sumy region of Ukraine.

During a visit to Kyiv, European Union officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine on the anniversary of the Bucha massacre, underlining the necessity for accountability regarding the actions of Russian forces. The ongoing complexities of European support for Ukraine are highlighted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s obstruction of a substantial EU loan for Ukraine, attributed to disputes over Russian oil transit.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged allies to sustain their focus on the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing its critical importance for European security and adherence to international law.
