Russia-Flagged Tanker Delivers Oil to Cuba Amid Energy Crisis
A Russia-flagged tanker carrying 730,000 barrels of oil has arrived in Cuba, representing the first significant oil delivery in three months amid a deepening energy crisis.
The Anatoly Kolodkin docked at the Bay of Matanzas, Cuba's largest supertanker and fuel storage facility, early Tuesday morning. The vessel was permitted to enter despite US energy sanctions, with the allowance stemming from administrative decisions made by President Donald Trump on the basis of humanitarian reasons.
Cuba's population has been facing extensive blackouts and economic hardships, making the oil delivery a crucial source of relief. President Miguel Diaz-Canel noted that the nation had not received any oil shipments in the preceding three months, a situation that has exacerbated the energy crisis, impacting essential sectors such as hospitals, public transportation, and food production.
The Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, conveyed his appreciation, underscoring the critical nature of this delivery amidst a challenging energy landscape. He indicated that the shipment would offer temporary assistance in the face of acute petroleum shortages and ongoing economic difficulties.
The processing of the fuel will require several days, but it is anticipated to alleviate some of the burdens on Cuba's energy requirements. Experts estimate that the crude oil from the tanker may yield approximately 180,000 barrels of diesel, which would meet Cuba's daily consumption needs for roughly 9 to 10 days. Historically, Cuba has depended on oil imports, predominantly from Venezuela; however, these shipments have notably decreased.
