Evacuation of U.S. troops from Mideast base sends community groups scrambling to help

April 3, 2026

NPR has confirmed that hundreds of U.S. Navy personnel have been evacuated from their strategic base in Bahrain following a series of Iranian missile and drone strikes. The evacuations from Naval Support Activity Bahrain, along with additional withdrawals from other regional military installations, represent a significant development in the ongoing conflict.

The evacuated base serves as headquarters for the Navy's 5th Fleet, a critical operational center responsible for maintaining maritime security throughout the Middle East. This includes safeguarding vital commercial shipping lanes in the region. Bahrain's strategic location as an island nation in the Persian Gulf, positioned approximately 124 nautical miles from Iran's coastline, places it within striking distance of Iranian conventional weapons systems.

Prior to the February 28 U.S. military action against Iran, approximately 8,000 military personnel were stationed at the Bahraini facility. The base became an immediate target following the commencement of hostilities, sustaining multiple direct hits during the conflict's opening phase.

Social media documentation and satellite intelligence from Planet Labs reveal the extent of the damage inflicted on Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Analysis of imagery captured between February 28 and March 6 indicates that Iranian ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles successfully struck at least seven structures within and surrounding the base perimeter.

The mass evacuation has prompted local community organizations to mobilize support services for returning military families as they navigate this unexpected transition back to U.S. soil.
