Britney Spears Faces Criminal DUI Charge After March Arrest

Pop star Britney Spears has been formally charged with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, stemming from her arrest in March for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The Ventura County District Attorney's Office filed the criminal charge on Thursday, April 30, with Spears' arraignment scheduled for Monday, May 4 at 9 a.m. PT. Court procedures allow her attorney to appear on her behalf, eliminating the need for Spears to attend the hearing in person.

According to a press statement from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, prosecutors plan to offer Spears a plea agreement known as a "wet reckless" charge. This type of plea deal is typically extended to first-time offenders who demonstrate low blood alcohol levels and incidents that did not result in accidents or injuries.

The district attorney's office emphasized that this resolution approach is "common, particularly when a defendant demonstrates self-motivation to address underlying issues" through rehabilitation or treatment programs. Spears proactively entered a rehabilitation facility earlier this month, demonstrating her commitment to addressing the situation.

Should Spears accept the proposed plea agreement, she would plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs. The anticipated penalties include a 12-month probation period, associated fees and fines, mandatory completion of a DUI education class, and credit for any time served in custody.

Representatives for Spears have not responded to requests for comment regarding the charges.

The incident occurred in March when California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a BMW "driving erratically at a high rate of speed." According to the CHP spokesperson who spoke with Rolling Stone, officers observed that Spears "showed signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests," which led to her arrest. She was processed at approximately 3 a.m. and released just after 6 a.m. the same day.

Following the arrest, a representative for Spears issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation: "This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
