JIUQUAN, China — On a Sunday night, China successfully launched the Shenzhou 23 spacecraft, carrying three astronauts on a mission to its space station, with one astronaut slated to remain in space for an entire year.
The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center located in northwestern China. This highly anticipated mission marks a significant step as China aims for its first crewed lunar landing, planned for 2030.
The crew consists of Commander Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Lai Ka-ying, who is also known by the Mandarin transliteration of her name, Li Jiaying. Notably, Lai is the first astronaut from Hong Kong to participate in a space mission, bringing with her a doctoral degree in computer forensics.
According to state media, the crew is tasked with executing numerous scientific and application projects during their time aboard the Tiangong space station. They will also conduct an in-orbit handover with the crew of Shenzhou 21, which has been onboard the space station for over 200 days.
A significant aspect of the Shenzhou 23 mission includes a long-duration stay, with one astronaut expected to remain at the orbiting space station for a year, an endeavor that would constitute one of the longest single missions in space globally. The objective of this extended mission is to investigate human adaptability and performance limits within the context of prolonged spaceflight, as reported by state media.
As China advances its space program, its astronauts have embarked on various missions to the Tiangong space station, which was developed following the country's exclusion from the International Space Station due to U.S. national security concerns.
The U.S. remains China's primary competitor in space, with NASA aiming to land astronauts on the lunar surface by 2028.
The Tiangong space station, which translates to "Heavenly Palace," welcomed its first crew in 2021. In the previous year, an emergency mission within the Shenzhou program, meaning "Divine Vessel," successfully retrieved a group of astronauts who were stranded on the space station due to a malfunctioning spacecraft.
