MVP Gilgeous-Alexander stars as Thunder level series with Spurs

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played a pivotal role in helping the Oklahoma City Thunder equalize the series against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals, securing a 122-113 victory. This win marks a significant comeback for the defending NBA champions after their Game 1 defeat.

In an impressive performance, the league's two-time Most Valuable Player recorded 30 points and delivered nine assists, setting the stage for the Thunder's triumph on Wednesday.

With this home victory, the series is now tied at 1-1, as the teams prepare to shift to San Antonio for Games Three and Four on Friday and Saturday.

"The guys brought it tonight, knowing what it would have meant if we lost this one," stated Gilgeous-Alexander. "We brought the energy from the jump."

In an intense matchup reminiscent of their previous double-overtime clash, the two teams, which boasted the best regular-season records in the NBA, showcased another thrilling display of basketball.

After a closely contested first quarter, the Thunder surged ahead to establish an 11-point lead by halftime. Gilgeous-Alexander, who struggled in the previous game, opened strong, frequently capitalizing on mid-range opportunities.

The Thunder's defense was formidable, forcing 13 turnovers that converted into 16 points during the first half alone.

In contrast, Spurs' standout Victor Wembanyama, who had dazzled with a remarkable 41 points and 24 rebounds in the first game, found difficulty finding his rhythm, often contending with Isaiah Hartenstein and the Thunder’s aggressive double-team defense.

However, teammate Stephon Castle turned heads with an electrifying dunk over the seven-foot Hartenstein, energizing the crowd and players alike.

Despite a 13-point deficit, the Spurs — missing starting guard De'Aaron Fox for the second consecutive game due to an ankle sprain — mounted a comeback to level the score midway through the third quarter.

Nonetheless, the Spurs were unable to regain the lead, as the Thunder maintained their composure under pressure.

"The guys were ready to play, [we] didn't get discouraged by the runs they made," reflected Gilgeous-Alexander post-game. "Obviously, they're a good team; they are gonna make runs."

In a physically demanding game, injuries affected both Oklahoma City's Jalen Williams and San Antonio's Dylan Harper, who exited and did not return.

In the final quarter, the Thunder built their lead once more. Gilgeous-Alexander executed a step-back jump shot, followed by an Alex Caruso lay-up that pushed the lead to nine with only 20 seconds remaining.

"We got a W [win]. It's all you can ask for. Now we got to go on the road against a really good team and go get one," Gilgeous-Alexander concluded.

A reflective Wembanyama commented on Gilgeous-Alexander's performance, noting that he "made shots, but nothing that he hasn't made all season." He added, "We worked on it, we just didn't apply as much."

The Oklahoma City Thunder aim to become the first team to repeat as champions since the Golden State Warriors accomplished this in 2017 and 2018. The Thunder achieved a league-best 64 wins during the regular season and demonstrated exceptional performance by sweeping both the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers, featuring LeBron James, in the playoff's initial rounds.

However, it is noteworthy that the Thunder faced challenges against the Spurs in the regular season, losing four of five matchups, while the Spurs claimed 62 wins in their return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

The outcome of this series will determine which team advances to face either the New York Knicks or the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.
