Usyk keeps titles with controversial Verhoeven stoppage

Oleksandr Usyk achieved a contentious victory, retaining his world heavyweight titles in Egypt with an 11th-round stoppage against kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven.

Verhoeven, making just his second appearance in professional boxing, exhibited remarkable aggression throughout the match, unexpectedly troubling the accomplished Usyk.

The bout unfolded as a tightly contested affair, with Usyk finding a late advantage and delivering a precise left uppercut that sent Verhoeven to the canvas.

Although Verhoeven managed to rise before the count concluded, a subsequent barrage of punches in the round's final moments prompted the referee to intervene, a decision that many observers considered excessively harsh towards the challenger.

At the time the fight was halted, the judges' scorecards reflected an even contest, reading 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 in favor of Verhoeven.

"This fight was hard. It was a good fight," Usyk remarked post-fight.

In a matchup often anticipated to highlight the disparity between elite boxing skills and the aspirations of crossover athletes, an unusually fatigued Usyk prevailed, marking his 25th professional victory.

Verhoeven, a veteran of the kickboxing world at 37 years of age, labeled the stoppage an "early stoppage" and called for a rematch, expressing confidence in the fight's competitiveness.

"I wanted the referee to let me go out on my shield or let me go in the 12th. I felt we were pretty even on the scorecards," Verhoeven stated.

Usyk's WBC title was up for grabs in this bout, which also served as a defense of his WBA 'super' belt, though Verhoeven would not have been eligible to claim that title even in the event of an upset.

The IBF sanctioned the match but did not offer its title for contention.

Lethargic Usyk survives major scare

The Pyramids of Giza provided a striking backdrop to this uniquely staged world title bout, held in a specially constructed open-air arena.

Verhoeven, a kickboxing heavyweight champion for over 4,000 days, made a dynamic entrance around 01:10 local time, accompanied by performers styled as Egyptian pharaohs, while Usyk appeared in a gladiator-themed outfit complete with a golden helmet.

Demonstrating his unpredictability, Verhoeven began the fight with high energy and consistent movement, successfully landing a solid right hand to Usyk's body early on.

In response, Usyk delivered a sharp double uppercut in the second round, which Verhoeven absorbed effectively, countering with two right punches of his own.

Notable figures from the boxing world, including Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, Terence Crawford, Gennady Golovkin, and Anthony Joshua, observed the action ringside, alongside Hollywood celebrity Jason Statham, who played a role in bringing the fight to fruition.

Another powerful right hand from Verhoeven connected with Usyk in the third round.

Faced with unexpected challenges, Usyk, typically known for his patience, expended considerable effort to regain momentum. He scored a significant straight right and a stinging left to hurt Verhoeven in the fourth round.

"Get back to your boxing, you're getting too greedy, trying to land and getting caught," Verhoeven's trainer, Peter Fury, cautioned his fighter.

Entering the sixth round marked a milestone for Verhoeven, as kickboxing bouts generally do not exceed five rounds, and his prior boxing match ended in under two rounds.

He adhered to his trainer's guidance and continued to apply pressure, while Usyk appeared increasingly sluggish, being rocked again by a right hand in the eighth. However, the champion regained his composure and surged in the 10th and 11th rounds, unleashing a flurry of punches, with the uppercut proving effective again.

As Verhoeven spat out his gumshield, Usyk protested the additional time his opponent received for recovery.

Seizing the moment, Usyk pressed forward, sensing an opportunity to finish the fight. Verhoeven showed visible signs of distress, and a stoppage could have realistically occurred in the 12th round had the bout continued.

Many believed Verhoeven deserved the chance to complete the fight.

Instead, the referee's intervention led to what is likely to be remembered as a disputed stoppage.

Rematch or Kabayel - what next for Usyk?

The pre-fight atmosphere had a hint of absurdity, as it unfolded as a formally sanctioned world title match, yet Verhoeven significantly challenged expectations.

"I am super proud of my performance, and hopefully the boxing world embraces me as a boxer. I am amazingly happy to be here," Verhoeven commented.

He emerged with commendable recognition, reinforcing his potential as a formidable and unpredictable heavyweight.

However, was this encounter his best opportunity, driven by an element of surprise?

The crossover scenario in combat sports is not new, following MMA fighter Francis Ngannou's close matchup with Tyson Fury in 2023 and his subsequent early defeat at the hands of Joshua.

Usyk's reputation may take a hit following this bout, and discussions surrounding the outcome and a possible rematch are expected to gain traction.

Following the fight, WBC mandatory challenger Agit Kabayel entered the ring, expressing his desire for a matchup.

"I have waited so long for this fight. I am ready and I think Germany is ready for the fight. Let's do it in a German stadium. I think all the fans want it," Kabayel declared.

In response, Usyk, who has suggested the possibility of only two more fights after facing Verhoeven, replied: "Let's do it, no problem. I am ready, brother."

Regardless of what lies ahead, Usyk faced one of the most challenging nights of his career against a contender few anticipated would pose such a challenge.
