Rating: 8/10

Pros:

  • High-quality components for the price.
  • Comfortable riding experience.
  • Responsive rear hub motor.
  • Walk assist and throttle functionality.
  • Companion app enables switching e-bike classes.

Cons:

  • Heavier than average.
  • Some buttons feel a bit sticky.

When assessing the performance of an electric bike, it is essential to consider a wide range of rider sizes and experiences. While maneuvering the Momentum Vida E+ out of my garage, its substantial weight of nearly 62 pounds posed a challenge. My daughter, on her lightweight bike, inquired about the heaviness of mine.

Longer riders generally find the weight less burdensome, as they often prefer larger bikes with greater carrying capacity. However, for someone of smaller stature, like myself (5'2" and 115 pounds), a lighter bike would significantly enhance both comfort and safety. The difficulties associated with handling or lifting a heavy bike can lead to safety concerns in busy urban environments.

Consequently, if you are new to biking or are on the smaller side, it is advisable to explore lighter alternatives, such as the Trek FX+ 1 or Momentum's own Voya line. Regardless of its heft, the Vida E+ is equipped with high-quality components that contribute to a pleasant riding experience.

Motor Performance

Momentum Vida E+

Momentum is the lifestyle e-bike branch of Giant, similar to how Trek includes Electra Bicycles within its brand. The Vida E+ has upgraded from a mid-drive motor to a new 500-watt SyncDrive S rear hub motor. This proprietary system is engineered to deliver a more natural riding experience compared to other motors like Bosch or Shimano, requiring only 4 newton-meters of force to engage.

During my comparison tests with various bikes, including a Tern GSD equipped with a Bosch cargo line motor, I did not notice a significant difference; overall performance largely depends on being in the appropriate gear relative to the selected assistance level.

The bike features three assistance levels: Eco, Active, and Power, along with a walk-assist mode. The bike's onboard computer estimates the range per mode, indicating up to 60 miles on Eco and approximately 35 miles in Power mode. During one leisurely ride where I solely utilized the throttle without pedaling, I utilized 10% of the battery over a distance of 5 miles.

The throttle assists acceleration up to 20 mph, essentially transforming the e-bike into a near-moped experience, particularly beneficial on chilly mornings. It is important to note that using the throttle reclassifies the Vida E+ from a Class 1 to a Class 2 e-bike. The RideControl app grants the ability to limit the bike’s top speed, making it compliant with commuting speed regulations.

The Vida E+ is equipped with an 80-millimeter front fork suspension, which adeptly absorbs bumps and potholes, thereby enhancing rider safety. Additional features include integrated lights, fenders, and a sturdy kickstand. Furthermore, the Vida E+ holds UL certification, ensuring safe charging practices.

Quality Components

Riding the Vida E+ offers a sensation akin to gliding on a plush sofa—a commendable experience that feels remarkably effortless for the rider. The step-through frame design promotes easy mounting and dismounting, further enhanced by ergonomically designed handlebars and comfortable geometry.

Produced by Giant, the bike is equipped with quality components offered at a competitive price point. The display is exceptionally readable, even in bright sunlight. The Suntour fork effectively absorbs shocks, while the Tektro four-piston hydraulic disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power, a notable feature for e-bikes in this price tier. When combined with Shimano shifters, these components work cohesively within the overall design, facilitating a safe and comfortable commuting experience.
