Topo Designs' Rover Trail Pack Might Just Be the Perfect Backpack

Topo Designs is lauded for its exceptional bags that combine aesthetic appeal with durability and practical features. The brand, based in Denver, is synonymous with gorpcore style, producing gear that not only looks appealing but also meets the needs of a sensible consumer without feeling excessive. Should fortune smile upon me, my attire and choices would subtly reveal this preference—exemplified by my groceries transported in Mountain Gear bags.

During my spring break in March, I embarked on a trip to Ireland and Scotland equipped with a carry-on roller bag and the Topo Designs Rover Trail Pack as my personal item. As I frequently test various bags, my selection of the Rover seemed routine. However, after enduring seven flights and staying at eight different hotels in just ten days, I quickly came to appreciate the Rover's functionality. Upon returning home, I was thoroughly convinced that this is the finest backpack I have ever utilized.

Key Features

Representative of the high-quality craftsmanship found in the six or seven other Topo Designs bags I have tested, the Rover Trail Pack cleverly integrates thoughtful features without appearing ostentatious.

The bag features a zipped compartment at the top that opens to a rucksack-style entry, secured by a drawstring. This pocket is ideal for storing keys, important documents, and occasionally my wallet. Normally, I am prone to checking and double-checking zippers to ensure nothing is lost, but the Rover alleviated such concerns. Inside the zipped compartment is a key clip and an additional zipped mesh sleeve, providing an extra layer of security for essential items—specifically, my and my daughter’s passports. Upon navigating through TSA, I attached my car keys and secured the passports in the mesh sleeve, giving me peace of mind regarding their safekeeping.

The main compartment stands out because, unlike many backpacks of similar size, it does not necessitate a top-down rummage. The inclusion of a J-shaped zipper runs the length of the bag, allowing for easy access to items at the bottom without disturbing those at the top. On one flight, I effortlessly retrieved my travel pillow and cushion from the pack’s depths right after boarding, managing to zip everything back up without needing to unpack my fleece or toiletries.

Additionally, the side pockets, designed for water bottles, feature spandex that accommodates various bottle sizes. While I typically abstain from drinking water on flights, I can attest that they easily held cans of Diet Coke.

Versatility for Trail and Travel

Designed primarily for outdoor use, this bag is more than suitable for day hikes. The lightly padded waist belt offers stability during movement; however, for my trip, I found it simplistic to throw a strap over my shoulder and tuck the waist belt beneath the foam backing. This adjustment is straightforward with the Rover. The foam backing is also ideal for protecting electronics, as there is a side zipper designed for this purpose.

With a capacity of 22 liters, this pack is ideal as a personal item or for day hiking excursions. A resourceful ultralight backpacker might even manage a summer overnight adventure using the clipped straps on the bottom along with the nylon loops for strapping on a sleeping bag or shelter. These loops can also be utilized for attaching soiled gear that one might prefer not to place inside the bag.

Final Verdict

As a dedicated fan of Topo Designs, I could have easily penned an ode to several of their bags. However, I find the Rover Trail Pack to be the most versatile option of the collection, making it my recommendation for anyone new to these products.
