BTS crowned 'Artist of the Year' at American Music Awards

South Korean seven-piece BTS have won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards for the second consecutive year, beating Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Bad Bunny and Lady Gaga. The award comes as the so-called kings of K-pop continue their $1 billion world tour following their return from a nearly four-year hiatus in March.

BTS crowned 'Artist of the Year' at American Music Awards

South Korean septet BTS has been honored as the Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards (AMAs) for the second consecutive time, reinforcing their position as one of the preeminent global music groups.

This accolade, regarded as the highest honor of the ceremony, adds to the illustrious achievements of BTS, who are currently engaged in a $1 billion world tour following their return from a nearly four-year break in March.

In addition to the main award, BTS also received the title of "Song of the Summer" for their lead single, SWIM, from their album, while their label partners, Katseye, were awarded "New Artist of the Year."

The viral hit GOLDEN, from the animated series K-Pop Demon Hunters, was recognized as the Song of the Year, and Sabrina Carpenter was awarded Album of the Year for her work, Man's Best Friend.

BTS triumphed over notable nominees including Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Bad Bunny, and Lady Gaga in the artist category, along with competitors such as Harry Styles, Tame Impala, and PinkPantheress in the song category.

Elections for nominees at the AMAs are determined by commercial success, whereas the winners are selected entirely through public voting, facilitated by the AMA website and social media platforms.

This voting style often leads to a competition among fan bases, and few are as fervent as the dedicated BTS ARMY.

Millions of devoted fans worldwide closely monitor every activity of band members Jung Kook, Jimin, V, Suga, RM, Jin, and j-hope — attending concerts, saturating radio stations with requests, and executing coordinated online initiatives to boost streaming metrics.

The official ARMY fan base, an abbreviation for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth, is a decentralized collective spanning multiple countries, widely acknowledged as a key factor in the group's remarkable rise.

"Armys, we did it once again!" exclaimed RM, the group's leader, during their acceptance speech. "As this is a fan-voted award, we extend our immense thanks and appreciation to Armys around the globe."

Having already established themselves as the largest K-pop group in history and a dominant force in the global music industry, BTS has only intensified its momentum since their return with the release of their fifth studio album, Arirang, in March. The band took a hiatus in 2022 to attend to mandatory military service.

A music critic from BBC noted that the album represents a "genuine return to form" for BTS, highlighting that they have "rekindled the fire" that fueled their previous successes.

"We have received such an overwhelming response to this album," stated J-Hope, age 32, during their acceptance of the AMA. "We truly appreciate your support of Arirang and each track on the album. We are very grateful."

"Thank you for accompanying us on our tour and for your boundless love in every city," added Jimin, who is 30 years old. "And to all the Armys who continuously support and care for us, thank you. We love you."

The ongoing tour, currently traversing the United States, is set to return BTS to Busan, South Korea, in June to perform concerts in celebration of their 13th debut anniversary.
